Lots of great marriage help here as Dan and I share the ups and downs of married life.

55 Reasons Why We're Still Kissing 55 Years Later
"So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate."
Matthew 19:6 NIV
Wow! Celebrating 55 years married to the most wonderful man in the world. How blessed we are to love and enjoy these years together.
We didn't get it right all of the time. In fact, if you read We All Married Idiots, you'll understand there were times we almost threw our marriage away. I'm so glad we remained true to the vows we spoke through our happy tears 55 years ago. When the hurting tears came, our vows to God and to each other were the glue keeping our frayed marriage together.
As we celebrate our 55th Anniversary, I jotted down 55 ways (in no particular order) we got it right. In hopes one will touch your heart and bless your marriage, I share them with you.
1. Read your wedding vows and repeat to each other often.
2. Go to bed at the same time whenever possible. The late-night pillow talk was precious and sometimes the only time we were alone during a busy day.
3. Make intimacy a priority.
4. Our marriage took priority over our children. We cherished our daughters and son and they knew they were loved. They also knew mom and dad loved each other, which brought joy and balance to our family.
5. Be polite. My husband opened the car door for me when we dated and on our wedding day. He still does today. Those little courtesies mean a lot and speak volumes to our children.
6. Date frequently. Your children will survive and thrive knowing mommy and daddy are going out just the two of them. Your child's greatest fear is that their parents will divorce. Seeing the two of you leave to enjoy each other may bring tears in the short run, but smiles for a lifetime.
7. Vacation as a family. When you vacation together, you bond as a family. When another family is included in your plans, the kids bond with the other kids and not with each other or to their parents. An occasional vacation with friends is fun, but not every year.
8. Overnight as a couple. Dan set as a priority that two weekends a year we get away together. I once said, "We can't afford this." He replied, "It's cheaper than a divorce." Dan was right.
9. Your friends should never be more important than your spouse.
10. Serve together at church or in the community. Find something you can do to work as a team.
11. Discover activities and fun you can enjoy as a couple. I learned to love golf.
12. Go on dates alone. Don't always go with another couple.
13. Read Christian books on marriage.
14. Keep going to marriage retreats. This can be one of your weekends away.
15. Your bedroom is your love sanctuary. Keep it clean and tidy and beautiful.
16. Play romantic music and light candles. Make your home and your bedroom a retreat you both want to escape to.
17. Do chores together. Raking leaves and shoveling snow is more fun as a twosome or a family.
18. Seek ways to make each other's life better. Ask yourself What can I do to make my honey happy today.
19. Celebrate big! Birthdays, Anniversaries, holidays are memory creators and make life fun.
20. Be flexible. A rigid spouse is not very huggable.
21. Practice kindness. Please and thank you never grow old. Kind people smile. So, smile. A lot.
22. Be patient. Spouses and marriages need time to grow up.
23. Consider your spouse before you consider yourself.
24. Romance never grows old! Be creative and romantic and fun!
25. Be content. Be happy with the person you married.
26. Build your spouse up. Don't push or nag.
27. Show and tell your spouse they are the most important person in your world.
28. Plan surprises!
29. Look nice at home and in bed.
30. Sit close.
31. Be present for big events whether a sick bed or a job promotion.
32. Pray for each other. Pray for your marriage.
33. Hold on during the bad times.
34. Disagree, but don't disrespect.
35. Choose your battles. Let go of the little irritations that don't matter.
36. Hold hands.
37. Fight fair. Stick to the subject of the dispute and never attack the person.
38. Forgive and forget. Remember, we all make mistakes.
39. Your spouse is not God, so don't expect perfection.
40. Encourage their dreams.
41. Avoid immorality of all kinds by watching and reading only uplifting, pro-marriage movies and television.
42. Choose your friends wisely.
43. Seek advice and counselling from Bible-believing, Godly pastors and friends.
44. Remember: This too will pass. What upsets you today may be forgotten tomorrow.
45. Leave your parents and cleave to your spouse.
46. Live, act, and speak like a married person. Leave your single life behind.
47. Don't belittle your spouse in public or private.
48. Our children knew our marriage bed was where mommy and daddy slept, not them. I know this is controversial, but it was important in our marriage.
49. Buy a lock for your bedroom door. Especially necessary when living with teens (for their sake and yours!).
50. Always seek to glorify God in your marriage! Your marriage is not about you, but about God's glory.

Why Our Marriage Works—Mutual Respect
Last night was a comedy of errors in our bedroom. The previous owners added a master bedroom suite. Sweet! And huge! Bigger isn't always better because there are 31 steps between my bed and the master bath. We old folks sometimes make several trips to that room in one night. Before morning, I've already had my exercise for the day.
Last night I woke to total darkness, half asleep I tried to make my way to the potty. First I walked into the bed post, losing my footing. Fifteen steps later, Dan's music stand toppled.
A night isn't complete without walking into the wall!
I comforted myself that I was in the vicinity of my destination as my toe stubbed the scale.
The name "Thinner" on the scale is a misnomer, btw.
Finally, at my destination, a little bruised and a lot awake, I flipped on the night light.
Dan murmured a sleepy"Are you all right?" as I returned to our bed now illuminated by the angel on our bathroom wall.
This morning, he asked "What happened last night?"
"The night light wasn't on and I walked in total darkness to the bathroom."
Dan, in remorse, said, "I am so sorry. I can't believe I forgot to turn on the night light. I always turn on the night light."
"No, it's my fault. I was the last one in the bathroom before bed. I should have turned on the night light."
"It's not your fault. It's my fault." Dan insisted.
"No it's not your fault. I'm at fault."
Wow! We almost had a fight not having a fight. How differently this scenario could have played years ago when we seemed to argue about everything.
"Why didn't you turn on the night light!!!"
"Well, why didn't you? You were the last one in the bathroom!!! It's not my fault you forgot."
"Well, I suppose it's my fault you left your music stand where I could trip over it!"
"Hey, if your feet weren't so big, maybe you wouldn't have tripped." (Dan would never say that even back then. But some spouses would.)
See how the anger escalates and the argument changes from the night light to a personal attack? Not good.
Philippians 2:3-4 is our favorite marriage verse, how we live, and how our marriage works:
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition, or vain conceit,
but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Each of you should look not only to your own interests,
but also to the interests of others."
Mutual respect.
That's why our marriage works.
We each look at the others interests before we look at our own.
We each consider the other better than ourselves.
Now, that's a win-win marriage!
Choose your arguments. What does it matter who forgot to turn on the night light? It may have mattered last night, but it won't matter next week.
Yet every angry word pounds a nail into your marriage coffin.
Choose your words and your arguments well.
May God splash serenity on your marriage as you follow His Light to your final destination.

3 Ways to Make Nice in Your Marriage
Pretty cool when a blogger asks my permission to blog about We All Married Idiots, specifically Chapter nine, titled "Make Nice." Wow! I love when God uses His Words to impact hearts.
Thanks Dawn Marie Wilson for encouraging us to choose to make nice and not to make mean. You can read Dawn's thoughts at

Say "I Love You" Every Time You Say Good Bye.
In my travels as a speaker, I am blessed to stay in the homes of lovely people. Many are precious widows. I love hearing their stories, for they have much to teach me.
Some watched their beloved suffer over years. Other deaths were sudden. The blink of an eye and their sweetie was gone. Whether a long death or quick, they all were final, and they all remember one thing:
Sitting around the kitchen table, talking over chamomile and honey, my widowed hostess and I were eager for more conversation, but our eyes were drooping. We decided to do the wise thing and get a good sleep.
"Do you mind if I say good night to my hubby before I turn in?" my widowed hostess asked.
She hit the "1" on the answering machine. The male voice echoed "Hi honey! I'm going to bed now. I hope you have a good sleep. Good night. I love you."
"Those were his last words to me. I listen to him say 'I love you" every night before I go to sleep"
He died years ago, and his loving voice still brings her joy as she heads to her empty bed.
Tears flowed as I witnessed an intimate moment in the life of a widow and her dear man. I'll never forget the lesson they taught me that night. I never leave Dan without telling him I love him.
What will be your last words to your beloved? Make sure you

An Interview with Dan and Elaine Miller on Their 45th Anniversary
Today is our 45th wedding anniversary. My hubby is taking me away, hey hey! We're going to Bermuda for a week celebration of our love. Will we have internet? We hope not, for we want to concentrate only on each other. We have so much to thank God for.
Our marriage almost failed, but God's power and Dan's pure determination kept us together. Being married 45 years is amazing. We know and love each other so well.
Danielle Peters, a friend and a writer and a passionate wife with her own marriage story, asked us our thoughts on marriage. May our answers encourage you to hold on to your marriage.
Danielle: What has been your favorite part of marriage?
Dan: I think the companionship of sharing life with someone you love.
Elaine: I agree. Sharing life with Dan has been an adventure. Not boring, for sure. He’s challenged me to climb that mountain, kayak that stream, shoot for par, write that book.
On the spiritual side, I’d say seeing God work in our lives individually and as a couple has been an exciting and favorite and humorous part of marriage. Our lives are proof that with God nothing is impossible.
Of course, raising a family together has challenges, but would also be one of my favorite parts of marriage. And now enjoying the next generation of grandchildren fills our hearts over the top.
Danielle: What has been the most challenging part of marriage?
Dan: Balancing self-interest with realizing that decisions we make affect two people. Doing what’s best for the couple not just what I want.
Elaine: Those child-raising years were our biggest challenge, in my opinion. We didn’t always agree on how to raise a child.
Dan and I are so different, but we respected our differences and worked to achieve common ground. I guess it goes back to Dan’s answer of putting the needs of a marriage before the needs of an individual.
Danielle: What is the biggest change in your marriage now after 45 years versus the first 5-10 years?
That’s funny. The early years were rough. We didn’t know what to do about our differences, so we argued and demanded our own way. Today, I can’t remember the last time we were angry with each other. After 45 years we finally figured out how to get along as a married couple.
There is great joy in enduring love. We’ve grown together, suffered together, experienced life together. We have learned how to live in harmony with each other because we’ve come to know each other so well.
Danielle: If you could leave your grandchildren with one piece of advice for their marriages, especially given the direction of marriage in our culture today, what would it be?
Dan: Follow the Biblical teaching of Philippians 2:3-4, “Don’t act out of selfish ambition or be conceited. Instead, humbly think of others as being better than yourselves. Don’t be concerned only about your own interests, but also be concerned about the interests of others.”
Elaine: God and Dan give good counsel. Each putting the needs of the other above their own needs, reaps a win-win marriage.
My advice would be to hold on. There may be days or years when you want to let go and give up. You don’t feel like you love your husband or wife. But circumstances change. Stress lessens, children grow up, spouses mature, finances improve, love returns. The person you are married to today is not the person he/she will be in five or ten days or months or years. On a better day you may be thankful you held on to your marriage. I guess it comes down to the word, COMMITMENT. Be committed to your marriage, hold on, don’t let go.
Danielle: Elaine, you write encouraging books for marriages that share a lot of your own stories. What makes marriage a topic of passion for you?
Elaine: We were almost a divorce statistic. I thank God for the work He did in our lives and for my husband’s commitment to our marriage. Dan refused to let me go. I adore my husband and I shudder thinking what my life would have been like had I successfully thrown him away. Too many marriages give up too soon for too little reason. My passion is to give hurting couples hope that their marriage can survive and thrive. I pray that, like us, couples will be ecstatic they held on and stayed married. Growing old together is a treasure!

Romance Begins in the Kitchen
Me: I love my new farm sink.
Dan: Do you love your farmer?
Me: I don't have a farmer.
Dan: I'm going to get me a chicken!
How could I not love this guy? I always have my eyes open for a story. Dan always has his heart open for romance.
Husbands and wives, if your spouse seems preoccupied with things like farm sinks, think of creative ways to grab their hearts' attention toward you.
I guarantee my farmer got a big kiss!
Still romancing after 44 years.
My husband is a splash of serenity to me. Do you bring serenity to your spouse?

Esteeming Your Spouse as a Gift to Treasure, Not as an Idiot to Tolerate.
Did you know my first book on marriage Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Wives contains a reflection titled "We All Married Idiots"?
At book signings, people were drawn to that "Idiots" title in my Drained Wives book and proclaimed "I need this book!"
So many resonated with "Idiots" that I decided to write a book on the subject. Hence was born, We All Married Idiots: Three Things You Will Never Change About Your Marriage and Ten Things You Can.
At least once in married life most will admit thinking they too married an idiot. I'm happy to show you that not only did you marry an idiot, you are one too! Don't we all make mistakes? Aren't we all human? Even perfectionists aren't perfect.
Yet God's plan for marriage is that you esteem your mate as a gift to treasure, not as an idiot to tolerate. My books teach you how.
You can read an excerpt from the reflection "We All Married Idiots" written in Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Wives on my guest post at

"We All Married Idiots" Impacts Healthy Marriages
Two author/speaker friends never intended to read We All Married Idiots. Afterall, there marriages were great. Why fix something that isn't broken? Well Idiots encourages great marriages to a higher level of greatness. Afterall, even the great can fall!
I was blessed when my friends with amazing marriages read We All Married Idiots and messaged me how Idiots impacted their already healthy marriages. I hope you will heed their advice and read We All Married Idiots too.
~Janet Lynn Mitchell, Author of Words Matter wrote:
“What? Me read a book about marriage?” I giggle to myself when given the book. “I’ve recently celebrated my 30th wedding anniversary, I’ve got this down.” Yet, drawn in by Elaine Miller's humor, I immediately discovered that “We all Married Idiots,” including my husband and me!
Elaine’s book, “We all Married Idiots,” is a must read for marriages of all durations. It can be read together as a couple, used in a Bible study, or cherished by a believing spouse who’s ready to give up. It offers the tools to empower your home and marriage to be its best!
In speaking at conferences, I often ask my audience, “If you were choosing a spouse for the one you married, would you have chosen YOU?” Even after 30 years of my own love and commitment, Elaine Miller's book gave me lots to think about and pray about, and offered me great ideas that will cause me to be a better wife and lover. Yes, because she dared to write We All Married Idiots, my husband and our children will all be helped by its words"
Faith Bogdan, Author of Who Are All These Children and Why Are They Calling Me MOM? wrote:
"Even though I wouldn't gravitate toward a marriage book b/c that's not where I need the most help in my life (thank God), I found your book so encouraging! A situation even arose hours later with my husband and your words came back to me: he is being an idiot, not a fool. There is a difference, and I can be thankful he's one and not the other! But more than that, I found I can apply the truths you wrote about in other relationships. In fact, I'm going to use some of your material in my Sunday sermon, "When God's People Disappoint." So helpful!
Just wanted to tell you. I"m sorry I never read it before; I had bought it for two people whom I felt needed it much more than me. God's timing is perfect; I'm glad I discovered it on my bookshelf!"
Book reviews are a splash of serenity on my day. Join my fight and God's fight for marriages. Please. I'd love for any readers to post a review on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Christian Book Distributors, or GoodReads. Thank you!
While you are at it, read and review my friends'excellent books.

The Love Story Written Between the Lines of "Where's Heidi?"
Where's Heidi? is a love story. It's a story of a sister's love, a community's love, a parent's love, and a Savior's love. There's another love story tucked between the lines as well. The love of a husband for his wife.
Ed and Lisa Buske were newlyweds when Lisa's sister was abducted from the local convenient store. She was never seen again. Lisa writes Where's Heidi? from a sister's perspective. But what about her husband? How was he in the midst of this tragedy?
In an instant, Ed Buske's life changed. In some ways I suspect he lost the bride he married months earlier. The honeymoon was over. Would that loss be temporary or permanent? He had no way of knowing. But he stayed and he loved and supported and held and kissed the cheeks and forehead of the woman he vowed to love until death do they part. A lesser man might have bailed. But not Ed.
Yesterday as I watched Ed Buske sit by his wife at her first book signing, I smiled and thanked God that Ed loved Lisa through those awful years. He did what my book, We All Married Idiots encourages husbands and wives to do. In a crisis and in the everyday, hold on, settle down, make nice, cheer on, sit tight, and look up!
The Buske marriage story could have ended quite differently. Many marriages don't make it through the difficult days.
My husband says Philippians 2:3-4 are the greatest verses on marriage in the Bible.
How about you? Is your marriage in a crisis? I encourage you to hold on, sit tight, look up, and consider your spouse's interest above your own. Ed did, and their marriage glows!

Splashes of Serenity on your life as you live by Philippians 2:3-4,

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit,
but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Each of you should look not only to your own interests,
but also to the interests of others."
Thanks, Ed, for not considering yourself in those days, but considering your Lisa as more important than you. Thanks, Lisa, for writing that truth between the lines of Where's Heidi?

Every Marriage Needs a Prague
Four days and five sleeps in the romantic city of Prague!
What a blessing for Dan and I to enjoy this beautiful City of Spires.
We laughed!
We hiked!
We climbed to the top of towers
(although we were urged to please take the elevator, we did not)
and we made it to the top!
We ate in the Square!
We enjoyed cafes and daffodils!
We didn't talk about work or problems.
We just had fun.
We enjoyed one-man bands.
Bands on the square
And the Prague Symphony Orchestra!
(No cameras allowed)
And we enjoyed delightful European hospitality.
Why can't American hotels heat their towels and toilet paper?
We went away and forgot about the world.
Concentrating only on each other and our love!
We laughed and played and had fun for four days.
Here's what we didn't do:
We didn't talk about work or problems or children or pets.
We didn't read a newspaper.
We didn't watch television.
We didn't argue or worry about tomorrow.
We didn't ask another couple to join us.
Wouldn't you agree that your marriage needs Prague?
You may not fly to Europe this week,
but you can plan a picnic or a walk in the park —
but you can plan a picnic or a walk in the park —
just the two of you.
Lavish praise on your lover and thanks to our God and enjoy romance.
It's all right.
Marriage is a gift from God.
Marriage is a gift from God.
Enjoy!!!
You don't have to spend money to enjoy an evening of fun with your lover.
Be creative!
Surprise your honey with an adventure!
For, afterall,
every marriagae needs a Prague!
I'd love to hear the best date you had with your honey. Why not do it again!
