Book Give-Away in Memory of George Green, the Man Who Inspired Me to Praise the Lord and Pass the Chemo

George Green loved baseball, cars, helping people, and cancer. Yes. Cancer. Why? Because his greatest love was Jesus and cancer gave him opportunity to tell people about his Savior.

When cancer hit me hard, I remembered George, his words, and his attitude. I, too, decided to praise the Lord and see cancer as a gift and not a curse. Thank you, George. You changed my life.

I write about George in Praise the Lord and Pass the Chemo: A Hopeful Response to a Hard Reality. Enjoy this partial excerpt from my book:

"'I have a praise report! I have cancer!' George smiled wide as he announced his diagnosis to a group gathered for a Wednesday night of prayer.

'George! How is that a praise report?' The stunned assembly seemed to ask in unison.

'Can you imagine the people I'll meet and tell about Jesus? Doctors! Nurses! All kinds of medical staff! Why, I'm having chemotherapy every week with the same seven people in the same room. I'm going to tell all of them 'I know I'm going to Heaven. Do you? And they won't be able to leave because we're all having chemo.'

For George, cancer was a reason for thanksgiving. Telling people about Jesus was his passion. Cancer opened doors to share his faith with people he otherwise might never meet.

I would have loved being in the doctor's office when the oncologist tried to heal George, and George tried to heal the oncologist.

'George, this is serious. You are a sick man.'

'Doctor, if you don't know Jesus as your Savior, you are a lot sicker than I am!'

Remembering my God-loving friend, I determined — like George — to look at cancer as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. . . . 

I walked into the cancer center with joy in my step and a prayer in my heart.

Every six weeks I receive a five-hour infusion in a private room with one nurse — what an opportunity to make a friend I may have never met, except for cancer. On my first infusion day the nurse and I talked about Jesus. . . . 

'You must be tired of listening to me.' I smiled as the sedative kicked in. My eyes and tongue were heavy.

'Oh, no! I could listen to you all day.' She meant it. Without a hint of flattery or a nurse's bedside manners, she spoke with sincerity as the Holy Spirit worked in her heart.

Later, with a hop and I skip, I left the hospital thanking George for his example and God for allowing me to share Jesus and hope with a new friend. Exhilarated by all God did that day, I got into my car proclaiming, 'Well, praise the Lord and pass the chemo.'"

Ha! My next thought was Oh no! That sounds like a book title! And so was conceived Praise the Lord and Pass the Chemo: A Hopeful Response to a Hard Reality. 

George was so excited to see the book! He bought multiple copies and passed them along to any in need. I remember his grin and excitement seeing God use him through this story.

George died July 7, 2019 at the age of sixty-six. I'm sure his smile is a mile wide and I suspect he's already asked Jesus if he wants a copy of my book. Thank you, George, for impacting this world and my life for Christ. I miss you. I rejoice that you are in Heaven with Jesus, the One you love most.

Joe lived the victorious Christian life when he was healthy and while he was sick. What joy to talk to him and be blessed with his outlook on life and cancer and death.

Joe blessed me with an interview for my book Praise the Lord and Pass the Chemo: A Hopeful Response to a Hard Reality. Cancer gave him a new perspective for living life. He praised God for the time he had left and that God gave him more months to live and love than doctors predicted. Thankful that God alerted him of his death, he made precious moments with his dear wife Pat and precious children Alyssa and Josh. Joe said,

"Without cancer, I would have been too busy working

 and not made some great memories with my family." 

Dear Pat, Alyssa, and Josh, how he loved you. I know those memories will hold your husband and father near to your heart.

JOSEPH A. TOLPA JR. Age 54 of Horseheads , NY formerly of New Hartford , NY passed away on Monday November 19 , 2018 peacefully at home with his family at his side after a long hard fought battle with cancer. Joe was born in Utica , NY on July 23 , 1964 the son of Joseph A. and Betty Jane Oleksik Tolpa. He was pre-deceased by his mother Betty. Joe is survived by his loving and devoted wife Patricia L. Hopkins Tolpa ; his children Alyssa L. Tolpa and Joshua A. Tolpa ; his father : Joseph A. Tolpa Sr. ; brothers and sisters : William & Ann Tolpa , Kathy & Rick Purcell , Karen & Steve Vedete , and Suzanne & Joe Hughes ; father-in-law and mother-in-law : Allan & Arlene Hopkins ; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law : Thomas & Rebecca Hopkins , and David Hopkins ; several aunts , uncles , nieces , nephews , cousins and a host of caring friends . Joe spent most of his life in healthcare as a nursing home administrator and a registered nurse. Most recently working at Absolut Care at Three Rivers . Joe also had an entreprenueral spirit , owning TruBlu Services for many years. Joe always felt it was important to give back to the community. He spent many years volunteering for different organizations . The list includes Rutland Lions Club , Pregnancy Resource Centers in Rutland , VT and Elmira , NY , Cub Scouts Pack 41 and Boy Scouts Troop 3041 of Horseheads, NY , as well as being a Deacon at Maranatha Bible Chapel . He was a proud recipient of the Lions Club Melvin Jones Fellow Award for his community service. Joe lived life to the fullest , spending time with family and friends. He loved the outdoors , hiking, camping , boating , skiing , and motorcycle riding .

Mother's Day Book Give Away

Happy Tenth Anniversary to my first book Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Moms!

Little did I know when I attended my first writer's conference without a clue how to write a book, that God had great plans.

 "Write what you are passionate about," said the writing teacher.

Hmmm. What am I passionate about? My bath! I'm passionate about my bath. And. I'm passionate about being a mom. 

And so was birthed my first book Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Moms.

A timeless treasure, this first book has withstood the test of ten years. In its third printing and  still ordered regularly by repeat customers.  Churches continue to buy in bulk to give to first-time moms. Still hearing from moms how Splashes of Serenity gives them just that — a splash of serenity.

With praise to God for putting His call to write into my heart, His writing conferences and writer friends to teach me to write, His blessing in 4,000 copies sold in it's first few months, and then there were these:

— The sweet moms who allowed their stories be written within the pages of S.O.S.

— The mom who buried two children and lived in fear her third would be taken. She opened S.O.S. and read Exodus 14:14 "The Lord will fight for you. You need only to be still." She thanked me for her first nights sleep in months.

— The mom of a brain-damaged boy who opened this book and cried tears of joy as God assured her "God Never  Says 'Oops!'"

— The grandma who learned her grandbaby would never walk. She opened S.O.S.  and realized God's love and care for her and for her granddaughter.

Are you a drained mom? Do you know a drained mom? My answer to both of those questions is "Duh! What mom is not drained on any particular day."

Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Moms is a book filled with true stories of hope from moms facing the most difficult challenges of parenting and moms drained by every day frustrations.

Do We Love Or Do We Love Well?

Do we love others or do we love others well? All of us love imperfectly. But loving “well” means we love them for their benefit rather than what it does for us or how it makes us look. We're not talking about perfection but we are talking about desiring another's good. We've all been around someone who is supposedly expressing love for us but it is disingenuous because it is really about them looking good or getting what they want. We don't really feel encouraged or cared for.

I, Larry, may be wrong but I sensed a lack of loving well when I received an e-mail from a man who was considering buying one of our marriage books for his wife. He wrote, “I choose to love my unsaved wife as I love myself. She has a lot of issues and it's my hope, prayer and confidence that my example, the light that I allow to shine in our home, and the love that I extend to her, just as God has done for me, will be a part of what God uses to save her.”

I didn't have any kind of relationship with this man to be able to inquire into his motives. But I could sense that he might easily come across to his wife as thinking himself better than her. I wondered if he communicated a belief that he never needed to repent of anything and that she should be grateful for the way he puts up with her.

And I also wondered, “What is his motive for needing to explain?” Does he speak to others with this same kind of superior attitude? If his wife shares with him the superior attitudes she senses, how would he respond? I had a deep sense that he wasn't loving her well. Unfortunately, he had concluded he loved her so well that he was amazed his sparkling and pristine example of Christ's love hadn't compelled her to become a Christian.

Here are other common ways we do not love well:

A husband buys his wife for their anniversary (or birthday or Christmas) what he wants for himself, not what she values. He looks forward to the admiring looks from his friends when he uses the item himself.

A wife plans an elaborate surprise birthday party for her husband, but he would rather enjoy a weekend away with her. But the accolades the wife gets at the party motivates her to throw another party the next year.

We’ve all been guilty at one time or another, but we may be able to avoid this error by focusing on how God loves us well. He always responds to us for our greatest good and desires our greatest benefit. Let’s make a commitment to do the same for those we love.

What is your book about?

My book helps women, in particular, to trust God more and thus worry less. It is filled with stories from my own life and the lives of others who learned how to do that very thing, along with Biblical principles and practical instruction. But that's not all! (Oh sorry, wrong commercial). I've also included Discussion Questions that a group or an individual can use. Plus, every chapter highlights a woman from the Bible who either struggled with worry or one who overcame her worry. And as if that's not enough, (this is sounding like a commercial), I've closed every chapter with a “Letter From God” which speaks to the reader about what she learned in the chapter.

Who is your book for?

As you can tell, my book is primarily for women readers but I believe men would benefit from it also.

Why do you think people worry?

Of course, there are many reasons but here are a few. We may have experienced some hurtful things in childhood and blamed God. So our hearts are fearful of turning control over to Him. We may think that worry gives us power in another person's life. I remember worrying when my teenaged son had to fly across country by himself to a Christian golf camp. I worried he would miss his connecting flight until God whispered, “You're worried because you want him to need you. Let him need Me.” Oh, how revealing. I could then release that worry and let God show Himself strong. Additionally, people worry because they really do think worry does some good. One woman told me, “Well, of course, worry works; after all, what I worry about doesn't happen.” I'm sure she was joking (I think!), but in our hearts, we can think it does some good. Unfortunately, worry only makes us tense and then we react in ways we regret. Plus, God isn't honored.

Give us the history of your book.

I'm very excited that Partly Cloudy is being reborn. It's the same book that was published in 2005 and now Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas saw it's value and is re-releasing it. Can I be honest about something I'm worried about, er, I mean trusting God for? I didn't add anything to the original book and it wasn't until the process was too far along that someone encouraged me to add an update. So offering the same material is a concern because those who already read it won't need it. (Did you know you can be concerned and it doesn't have to turn into worry?) So I'm trusting God that my readers will want to be reminded of the material, knowing that none of us overcomes worry completely.

Why did you write Partly Cloudy with Scattered Worries?

God was working and tranforming me to trust Him more and I wanted to share what I had learned. My desire is to help readers trust God more by being convinced of His greatness, sovereignty, power, love, and involvement. We can say we trust God but then we give in to anxiety, People Pleasing, controlling others, regrets, fear, and trying to provide for ourselves when God says to wait on Him. Our responses actually reveal that we don't trust God as much as we think we do.

What is your ultimate desire for your ministry?

I've been in ministry for a long time—my first article was published in 1978 and my first book in 1984. Hard to believe since I'm not that old! But in all these years, I've been motivated to minister in such a way that women see God in truth and then take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5). Much of our worry is because we believe lies about God and we allow any thought to permeate our minds as truth. Although I'm learning like everyone else to trust God more and more, I desire to help every woman know she can believe God wants the very best for her and then want His glory.

Ha! I never knew when I agreed to review Janet Thompson's book, Dear God, He's Home! A Woman's Guide to Her Stay-at-Home Man how desperately I needed this book.

Dan and I prayed about retirement for months without finding peace. In September my Dan came home and announced he is retiring in August 2014. I was surprised. Can't imagine my man not getting up every morning and going to work. I plan to continue my writing and speaking career. Attending a National Day of Prayer breakfast this morning, I realized anew the value of family to the stability of our nation and the importance of prayer to the state of our union. We live in a sin-sick world. There is no better way to fight sin than to pray.

As I say in We All Married Idiots, "Prayer paralyzes the devil and activates the Holy Spirit." When satan is paralyzed and the Holy Spirit energized, our Lord will be glorified in our marriage, in our children, in our schools, in our government, and in our world.

"Prayer works. It changes our marriages faster than nagging, screaming, silence, sexual abstinence, belittling, leaving, or any other sinful behavior satan tempts us to do. . . . Give up your troubles to the Lord. Just give up! Throw your arms up, give up, and pray! . . . satan doesn't want us to pray, which is all the more reason we should." ~ We All Married Idiots

God placed a passion in my heart for marriages. This morning as I prayed with Pastors, government officials, and the Mayor himself, I realized anew the magnitude of marriage and the power of prayer to the state of our union.

My Reflections on Writing Bathtime Reflections for Drained Wives

"No one is going to read this!" I assured myself as my fingers pounded out our secrets on my keyboard. My picture-perfect marriage was being exposed with the fact that we had flaws--big ones. No one knew I packed Dan's bags three times the first year we were married. I continued typing knowing if I was going to write a book that would help husbands and wives, I had to be real. I could not have the attitude, My marriage is perfect! Why isn't yours?

When a book contract arrived for Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Wives, I cried--loudly--and wondered if my Pastor husband would lose his job or if my teenage children would forgive me for being in their minds the "Christian Dr. Ruth." All the while, thoughts of if this book helps one marriage, it will be worth it filled my heart.

Months later a stranger approached me and said, "I just want you to know your book saved my marriage." It was worth it. I hope it is worth it to you as well.
