3 Ways to Make Nice in Your Marriage

Pretty cool when a blogger asks my permission to blog about We All Married Idiots, specifically Chapter nine, titled "Make Nice." Wow! I love when God uses His Words to impact hearts.

Thanks Dawn Marie Wilson for encouraging us to choose to make nice and not to make mean. You can read Dawn's thoughts at
http://www.upgradewithdawn.com/blog/2016/9/15/3-ways-to-make-nice-in-your-marriage.html

We choose. Every day. Make Nice or make mean. Which one do you think brings a splash of serenity to your home? Why would you ever choose the other?

Serenity hugs from God to you, dear readers,

Miller's Ministering to Marriages in Bosnia Herzegovina

Please Lord, let  one marriage be impacted by this book, I prayed as I typed away writing We All Married Idiots: Three Things You Will Never Change About Your Marriage and Ten Things You Can.

If just one marriage is helped, all this work will be worth it.  I cried (literally) as I bared my soul and my marriage troubles for all the world to read. And, indeed, the world is reading. Little did I know the plans God had for We All Married Idiots would be greater than I ever asked or imagined.

"Now all glory to God,
Who is able,
through His mighty power at work within us,
to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think."
Ephesians 3:20 (NLT)

When International Workers (IW's) in Bosnia Herzegovina (BiH) asked permission to translate We All Married Idiots into their language, my publisher and I didn't hesitate to give them the go ahead. There are few books on marriage available in the BiH language, and the IW's saw We All Married Idiots as a ministry tool. They were right in their assessment. And didn't they choose an amazing cover!

Soon the invitation came for my husband Dan and I to come to Bosnia Herzegovina for two weeks of book promotion and marriage seminars. We leave March 9. Our schedule is packed with opportunities as we lead a marriage retreat for BiH church leaders, speak in churches, and teach
at Mostar Bible School. Booksigning and speaking events are also planned in community centers where the target audience is secular.

Thank you to all who have encouraged and prayed for me for many years. You are dear to my heart.

If ever I need prayer, I feel it is now.

Please pray as Dan and I speak many times over two weeks.

Pray for our health and safety.

Pray for BiH marriages.

Pray we will have wisdom to counsel and connect with BiH couples despite the cultural and language barriers.

Thank you to all who travel my journey with me.

To those who dream big dreams, don't give up. Don't grow weary. Keep writing and impacting the world for Christ.

May God give splashes of serenity to the marriages in Bosnia Herzegovina, I pray,

Will You Partner with Me to Fight for Marriages?

I'm passionate about marriage. Too many give up on their marriage too soon (like I almost did) and throw away a love that God intended to bless (like he did mine).

I wrote We All Married Idiots (it took me four years) to help marriages keep running when they feel like giving up. To persist when they hit the wall. To turn to the best marriage healer of all — Jesus Christ. My heart smiles when I hear from a husband that he prays the last prayer in the book every morning, when I learn a wife has read Idiots five times, when a couple writes that they are staying together instead of divorcing because the words in We All Married Idiots changed their marriage.

In the past week I received four 5 star reviews. My soul rejoices. One read:

"God has worked through Elaine Miller as she wrote this book. If you are thinking of getting married, if you've been married for years, buy this book, read it and then read it again. Have married children? Buy them a copy...it will be the best dollar you ever spent. Take a long look in the mirror and then sit down and read 'Idiots' and as you do, you'll see your marriage and yourself unfold one page at a time. Brilliant."

Brilliant? No, I'm not brilliant. Another reviewer called Idiots, "Genius!" (How's that for an oxymoron?) I'm not genius either. But I am thankful. I am thankful for each review I receive because that review may be the one that stirs a reader to buy the book, read it, and save their marriage.

Readers, we are in a partnership. I thank God for each one of you. I need you.

I heard  (although I'm not sure it's true), that if a book receives 100 Amazon reviews then Amazon considers the book viable and promotes it. I'd like the opportunity for Amazon to invest in marriages by receiving 100 reviews.

I have 92 reviews!!! So close! If God leads you to partner with me in reaching 100 reviews, will you please do so at http://www.amazon.com/We-All-Married-Idiots-Marriage/dp/0984765522/

Will you pray for marriages in crisis around the world?

Will you consider having a We All Married Idiots book study in your home or at your church?

I thank God for your partnership. Thank you reviewers and readers of We All Married Idiots. I poured four years of my life into writing Idiots because I care about marriages. I care about your marriage.

Thanks for your partnership in the Gospel! Let's splash serenity on marriages at Amazon.com.

Be blessed this day!

Seek Help. Don't Seek a Divorce

Every time a book on marriage is sold, that's another marriage seeking help instead of seeking a divorce.

When I hear one of my books sells, I immediately pray for that couple that God would reveal hope, truth, healing, and guidance for that relationship.

Author Jean Oathout shares my passion for marriages. In her book,  Granny's Guide to Marriage in Verse, she writes powerful truths with poetic beauty.

Today on Jean Oathout's blog, www.jean-oathout.blogspot.com, Jean shares many resources helpful to marriages. If you want to seek help and not a divorce, please check out what Jean recommends.

Thanks, Jean, for featuring We All Married Idiots and my husband's and my ministry to marriages.

May marriages be blessed through our ministries, Jean. You splashed serenity on my day which I pray splashes serenity on marriages throughout this world.

Praying many will seek  help and not seek a divorce,

Elaine Talks Marriage With Linda Rooks

What a thrill being interviewed by author, Linda Rooks, on her Heart Talk Blog. She knows about broken hearts and finding hope.

Check out her blog as we discuss marriage at www.lindarooks.com/blog/

Meet Linda W. Rooks

Linda W. Rooks often finds hope in unexpected places. Because, amazingly, Linda has found that despite circumstances, when God is beside us, hope is never far away.
After Linda’s own marriage survived a three-year separation, she walked with her husband through a time of God’s healing and soon began shifting much of her energy into sharing hope with those who are hurting. Since that time she has ministered to hundreds of people in classes and over the Internet, traveling with them through the pain of broken hearts and relationships to help them find the healing that comes from God. She and her marriage ministry were featured in Today’s Christian Woman in 2009.
Meet LindaLinda W. Rooks is the author of Broken Heart on Hold, Surviving Separation, released in June 2006 by David C. Cook and now in its fourth printing with a new cover. Her stories and articles have appeared in a number of national publications including Chicken Soup for the Beach Lover’s Soul, Focus on the Family, Today’s Christian Woman, HomeLife, Light and Life, The Lookout Catholic Forester, Preserving Christian Homes, The Orlando Sentinel, San Diego Family Magazine, and several online venues, including Grace Centered Magazine, Assist News Service, and Thinking About Suicide blog, She is a regular contributor to Tapestry, a Walk Thru the Bible devotional magazine for women, and for eight years Linda served in various editorial positions for Center Stage Magazine, a Central Florida Arts and Entertainment publication. She is a contributing author to Love is a Verb by Gary Chapman and Bethany House’s Angels, Miracles, and Heavenly Encounters.

Esteeming Your Spouse as a Gift to Treasure, Not as an Idiot to Tolerate.

Did you know my first book on marriage Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Wives  contains a reflection titled "We All Married Idiots"?

At book signings, people were drawn to that "Idiots" title  in my Drained Wives book and proclaimed "I need this book!"

So many resonated with "Idiots" that I decided to write a book on the subject. Hence was born, We All Married Idiots: Three Things You Will Never Change About Your Marriage and Ten Things You Can.

At least once in married life most will admit thinking they too married an idiot. I'm happy to show you that not only did you marry an idiot, you are one too! Don't we all make mistakes? Aren't we all human? Even perfectionists aren't perfect.

Yet God's plan for marriage is that you esteem your mate as a gift to treasure, not as an idiot to tolerate. My books teach you how.

You can read an excerpt from the reflection "We All Married Idiots" written in Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Wives on my guest post at

Enjoy a splash of serenity on your marriage today,

Pre-Wedding + Post-Marriage Counseling = A Win/Win for Newlyweds

Our wedding was a dream, but our marriage was a nightmare. We were married three weeks the first time I slept on the couch. I packed my husband's bags three times our first year of marriage.

I suspect (and divorce statistics confirm) this is the case for many newlyweds.

Our pre-wedding counseling didn't cover the above scenario, but post-marriage counseling could.

Is pre-wedding counseling effective? Do the engaged duo even hear what the counselor is saying? I doubt it. She's thinking about wedding gowns, and reception halls. He's thinking about the wedding night!

After the rice is thrown and the trip to the Caribbean is over,  Mr. and Mrs. face the reality of fading tans and rice needing swept from the floor. Disillusioned, they look at each other and wonder Now what?

Post-wedding counseling. That's what! Perhaps now counselors will have a couple's full attention.

Please couples, contact the person who gave you pre-marriage counseling and ask for another appointment.

Please counselors, make post-marriage counseling part of your mandatory wedding package.

I first heard of post-marriage counseling from a Pastor at my book table. He bought We All Married Idiots, took it home, read it, and returned to buy more. He said Idiots was a great book for post-marriage counseling. Laughing, he admitted that a few months after the wedding the couple may start thinking Oh dear! I married an idiot!

Last week an engaged couple notified me that they showed We All Married Idiots to the person doing their pre-marriage counseling. Their counselor read Idiots. loved it, and will use this book for pre- and post-marriage counseling. What a thrill for me!

I do hope post-marriage counseling catches on. Marriage is in crisis. We must not give up efforts to teach couples that marriage is not about the wedding plans. Marriage is about keeping the vows.

Making Cold Marriages Hot Again

Writers don't go through years of labor birthing a book so no one will read it. We want our books read and to matter and to make a difference in lives.
I rejoiced this week, the hottest of the year, that We All Married Idiots was hot! Idiots is read, it does matter, and the book is making a difference in lives.
The following reviews showed up on Amazon.com this sweltering week, making me sweat drops of joy!
5.0 out of 5 stars From One "Idiot" to Another "Idiot", July 16, 2013
When I told my husband the name of the this book, he said, "Now that sounds like a good book!" And indeed it is, and one that every married couple should read and discuss together. Elaine Miller gives us that opportunity in her "Change" section. Elaine emphasizes that there are no perfect marriages because there are no perfect people. Couples today are so quick to leave a marriage hoping to find a better one...but they take their same "idiot self" into the next marriage to another "idiot".

I loved this book so much that I included a quote from it in my book Dear God, He's Home! A Woman's Guide to her Stay-at-Home Man, and included it in my recommended reading list. That is the highest recommendation I could give since I only wanted to include books that I knew would help strengthen marriages during a time of transition.

Readers will find themselves changing and discovering that those things that drove them crazy about their spouses are not so bad after all. And who knows...maybe neither spouse will feel like such an idiot after they read and study this book together!

***************
The above was written by a well-respected author. The next from a reader who loves her man and cares about marriages — her own and her friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book, July 17, 2013
This review is from: We All Married Idiots: Three Things You Will Never Change About Your Marriage And Ten Things You Can (Humorous Books | New Releases) (Kindle Edition)
This is the best book I have read in a long time! Not only did it open my eyes to a lot of things in my marriage I laughed everytime i read it and even cried a few times. Though she puts a funny twist on a lot of things it is a very serious book. All too often we give up instead of looking up. I am considering buying this in print to pass on to a few young couples i know. Would make wonderful wedding gifts in my opinion. I would give this one 10 stars!
 ****************
I didn't spend four years of my life writing We All Married Idiots to make money or to stroke my ego. My heart aches for couples to stay together and experience marriage as the blessing God intended. My prayer is that husbands and wives would look at their spouse as a gift to treasure, not an idiot to tolerate.

My hope is to make cold marriages hot again!

Do you know a marriage in trouble? Won't you gift them with We All Married Idiots?

Book reviews are like splashes of serenity on a hot day!

Book Reviews Aren't About an Author's Ego

Celebrating We All Married Idiots 50th five star review on Amazon! I love round numbers. Going for 100!!!

Reviews aren't about stroking this author or padding my bank account. Reviews sell books that help marriages. My heart beats to save marriages and families from the pain of divorce.

If you would review my book, I'd appreciate it. You don't have to be a great writer to create a review. Just speak from your heart how God worked in your life through reading the book.

Thank you to Author Carole Brown who gave me my 50th five star review of We All Married Idiots on her blog (http://sunnebnkwrtr.blogspot.com/2013/07/reviews.html) and on Amazon.com.

Carole wrote:

"Wow. What a wonderful, heart-touching devotional book.

I loved the title the first time I heard it. And now that I've read the book, I can't say enough good about it. The ten valid reasons men and women can change about his/her marriage are thought-provoking. Every chapter was easy to read, understand and practical and was priceless with down-to-earth illustrations, some funny and many sad, but all real in today's world. Every meditation was filled with appropriate scripture. Every reflection was icing on the chapter cakes, the added touch to bring home the truth. Each prayer rich with pleadings a sincere heart can pour out to God. And the suggestions in the Change sections? Brings to mind the words: Go forth and be fruitful. Powerful acts that can and will create results.

I highly recommend this book for ALL marriages. It's never too late to fall in love again. It's never too early to determine to keep that love preeminent in a new marriage. By all means buy this book. By all means share with your family and friends."

Thanking God for the splash of joy 50 five stars bring. Praying for 100 and seeking 51. Will you be my next reviewer? Thank you!!! Click the book above and you'll go directly to Amazon.com where you can leave a review.

Strengthening Military Marriages

Congratulations to Lt. Col. Tony and Penny Monetti on today's release of  their new book, Honored to Serve: Guidance and Encouragement for Military Families in Transition.

Lt. Col. Tony and Penny Monetti know the difficulties and transitions of military life. I can say this, because I watched them. The Monetti's attended our church during the Gulf War when Tony was stationed at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY. My husband had the honor of baptizing both Tony and Penny.

The day Tony left for Desert Storm is etched in my mind. I could not imagine my husband going to war and leaving me alone to raise our family. For Tony and Penny, this was their life.

My review: "Powerful! Practical! Personal! Tony and Penny Monetti know the difficulties and transitions of military life, and point you to the God Who goes before you and stays with you in the battle for your marriage, your children, and your country. Learn from their experiences how to be a person of honor, integrity, and valor maintaining physical, mental, and spiritual balance. Every couple needs to arm themselves with Honored to Serve as their survival guide for military families in transition." ~ Elaine W. Miller, Author and Speaker

From the back cover:

"IT IS A RARE SORT OF VALOR THAT CAUSES SOLDIERS AND THEIR FAMILIES TO SACRIFICE FOR THEIR COUNTRY. THEY LIVE LIVES PUNCTUATED WITH UNCERTAINTY TO DEFEND THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM.

Tony and Penny Monetti have known this uncertainty. "In 24 years of military service we deployed for war. We experienced the fear of combat against an enemy and mustered the courage to fight. We refit the family puzzle pieces when their shapes changed with each mission, deployment, and reassignment."

Military families are constantly in transition, but transition does not have to be unmanageable. Honored to Serve provides tools to deal with issues such as combat-related stress, financial hardship, wounded relationships, reentry into civilian life, and more. Written from the perspectives of a military service person and a spouse, this insightful book not only encourages military families but also provides a wealth of resources for soldiers and their loved ones."

I Slept Alone Last Night.

Tossing and turning in my sleep, I reached for him, longing to feel him next to me — where he should be, but wasn't.

Dan slept in a different bed last night in another part of the state. I missed him.

When we married, God joined us as one person physically, spiritually, emotionally. Half of me was gone last night. Disturbing our oneness unsettled my sleep.

My marriage isn't perfect. There are moments when I want to escape to the guest room. Thankfully, those times are rare and brief.

How about you? Are you one with your spouse, or is there a wall (seen or unseen) between you? Whatever is going on in your marriage, please don't give up. Seek help.

I wrote We All Married Idiots because when we hit the wall, I almost threw away the most precious man and our amazing marriage. Too many husbands and wives give up too soon for too little reason.

Being a divorce statistic is not fun. Generations of  lives are hurt on your way to the lawyer.

God is using We All Married Idiots to help marriages survive and thrive. This week marks one year since my book's release. Many marriages have been helped, but there are many more sleeping alone tonight (and not because of a business trip). Would you please recommend We All Married Idiots to your friends? Perhaps, you need to read it too.

Thank you for caring about marriages. I'm praising God for healthy marriages being made more healthy and hurting marriages healed.

We All Married Idiots is available at your local bookstore or on-line. http://www.amazon.com/We-All-Married-Idiots-Marriage/dp/0984765522/

Dan returns home tonight. I look forward to sweet sleep in the arms of the man I almost gave up. Thanking God for keeping us from making the biggest mistake of our lives. Thanking God for my marriage. Praying for yours.

Enjoy sweet dreams in the arms of your beloved as a splash of serenity to your marriage.

Author Faith Bogdan Inspired by We All Married Idiots

Received the greatest compliment today! We All Married Idiots inspired author Faith Bogdan to write the following blog (April 19, 2013) she titled, "Where to Find Idiots: Thoughts on Marriage and Church Relationships":
http://thenonreligiouschristian.blogspot.com/2013/04/where-to-find-idiots-thoughts-on.html?spref=fb

Please read it and you'll understand why We All Married Idiots, and you will catch a glimpse of the subject of my next book!

Faith's marriage is solid so reading We All Married Idiots wasn't her first priority. God had other plans. Thanks for reading my book, Faith, and for writing this amazing commentary about the state of marriage and church relationships.

Had to steal Faith's photo too. Isn't this just a splash of serenity for this bathtub girl!

Thanks for the Splash of Serenity, Faith!!!

"We All Married Idiots" Impacts Healthy Marriages

Two author/speaker friends never intended to read We All Married Idiots. Afterall, there marriages were great. Why fix something that isn't broken? Well Idiots encourages great marriages to a higher level of greatness. Afterall, even the great can fall!

I was blessed when my friends with amazing marriages read We All Married Idiots and messaged me how Idiots impacted their already healthy marriages. I hope you will heed their advice and read We All Married Idiots too.

~Janet Lynn Mitchell, Author of Words Matter wrote:

“What? Me read a book about marriage?” I giggle to myself when given the book. “I’ve recently celebrated my 30th wedding anniversary, I’ve got this down.” Yet, drawn in by Elaine Miller's humor, I immediately discovered that “We all Married Idiots,” including my husband and me!
Elaine’s book, “We all Married Idiots,” is a must read for marriages of all durations. It can be read together as a couple, used in a Bible study, or cherished by a believing spouse who’s ready to give up. It offers the tools to empower your home and marriage to be its best!
In speaking at conferences, I often ask my audience, “If you were choosing a spouse for the one you married, would you have chosen YOU?” Even after 30 years of my own love and commitment, Elaine Miller's book gave me lots to think about and pray about, and offered me great ideas that will cause me to be a better wife and lover. Yes, because she dared to write We All Married Idiots, my husband and our children will all be helped by its words"

Faith Bogdan, Author of Who Are All These Children and Why Are They Calling Me MOM? wrote:

"Even though I wouldn't gravitate toward a marriage book b/c that's not where I need the most help in my life (thank God), I found your book so encouraging! A situation even arose hours later with my husband and your words came back to me: he is being an idiot, not a fool. There is a difference, and I can be thankful he's one and not the other! But more than that, I found I can apply the truths you wrote about in other relationships. In fact, I'm going to use some of your material in my Sunday sermon, "When God's People Disappoint." So helpful!
Just wanted to tell you. I"m sorry I never read it before; I had bought it for two people whom I felt needed it much more than me. God's timing is perfect; I'm glad I discovered it on my bookshelf!"

Book reviews are a splash of serenity on my day. Join my fight and God's fight for marriages. Please. I'd love for any readers to post a review on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Christian Book Distributors, or GoodReads. Thank you!

While you are at it, read and review my friends'excellent books.

My Five Most Asked Marriage Questions May Surprise You!

Giovanni Gelati's face turned red when I answered his question, "What are the five most asked questions you receive relating to marriage?"

By far, the most asked question is "How can we keep sizzle in our sex life?"

Listen to my answer to my five most asked questions regarding marriage:

1. How can we keep sizzle in our sex life?

2. I am in a hopeless situation. Is there hope for me?

We All Married Idiots — Oh the Places You'll Go!

One thing I know — marriage difficulties are universal. I felt that when I wrote We All Married Idiots: Three Things You Will Never Change About Your Marriage and Ten Things You Can, although I never imagined where God was taking this book.

One of my first reviewers lives in Alaska. Amazon geographics show We All Married Idiots sold in every state except Utah and New Mexico.

One of the first Kindle sales went to Uruguay. Within days I received word from this buyer asking if We All Married Idiots could be translated into Spanish. That's happening right now. Please pray as this Spanish edition is produced.

A woman from Spain whom I've never met, (she also read Idiots via Kindle) read my blog post about the Spanish translation and offered her help to see Idiots translated. Spain needs marriage help too! An  English-speaking friend in El Salvador is anxious to see this Spanish translation as well. There is a need in El Salvador.

My husband and I just returned from a ministry trip to Bosnia/Herzegovina. Our hosts  also read We All Married Idiots on their Kindle. They asked for a hard copy (of course I had five with me). They took them all and asked permission to translate Idiots into the Bosnian language. WOW!

Dear ones, will you pray for this work as it goes into all the world. I always wanted to be a missionary. God closed that door. But He is opening this one — WIDE!

Meanwhile my speaking opportunities come in weekly. To my surprise I received a CONGRATULATIONS! from LinkedIn announcing I was in the top one percent most endorsed in the United Sates for Public Speaking out of 200 million people. Woo Hoo!

I'm not tooting my horn. I'm thanking God and asking you to pray for this ministry God has opened to me. satan would like nothing more than to destroy me and  you and all of our marriages. Your prayers will stop his attacks. Please pray for the Spanish and Bosnian translators. Pray for their protection as they produce multi-lingual copies of We All Married Idiots.

Thank you for being a splash of serenity in my life and in the lives of marriages yet to read We All Married Idiots,

Book Signings! The Joy of Your Labor!

Woo Hoo! It' a book signing day!

Some authors don't enjoy book signings. Not me.  I'm a people person. It takes discipline to sit at my computer and write all day. Discipline is painful. Meeting readers and signing my books does not hurt. It's the joy of my labor.

The sweet couple (in the above photo) came as strangers and left as friends. Their marriage is strong because they work at keeping their love alive. Laughing, they left with We All Married Idiots and plans to read it together every night before sleep. Hmmm. You see why I love book signings!

I still pray for the hurting woman years ago who came to my table. She didn't look at me. She picked up my book Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Wives. Reading page after page, she eventually looked up and said, "I have every intention of leaving my  husband, but first I'm going to read this book." I hugged her and prayed with her right there in Barnes & Noble. You see why I love book signings!

Join me in prayer for the people God already planned to stop by my table today. Maybe it's you!

Meet me at the DeWitt Barnes & Noble, 3454 Erie Boulevard East, DeWitt, NY from 1:00 to 3:00 today, Saturday, February 2, 3013.

I'd love to wish you Happy Valentine's Day! There will be kisses!!! Hersheys, that is.

After the book signing, I drive to Rochester, NY where I am speaking on marriage at the Trinity Alliance Church, 1275 Spencerport Road, Rochester, Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Kudos to Pastor Denes House who is preaching a series on marriage! He's giving his pulpit to me this Sunday. Brave man!!!

If you are in the Rochester area, come see me at Trinity. I won't give you kisses (Hersheys), but lots of food from God's Word to nourish your marriage.

Praying for a Splashes of Serenity in a building filled with books and readers and a church filled with Bibles and worshipers.  Ahhh! Feels like good places to be on a snowy weekend!
