Elisabeth Elliot Autographed my Heart

I want to write like Elisabeth Elliot. How did she write? She wrote deep. She wrote joy. She wrote pain. She wrote Christ.

I want to write so well and so true that my words impact lives for Christ. For Elisabeth Elliot's words brought me closer to my Savior. Isn't that every Christian author's goal? Or shouldn't it be?

I remember meeting her long before I had any thought that one day I would speak at conferences and autograph my own books She spoke truth with eloquence and intelligence and experience.

When we met at her book table, I stared into the eyes of this dear one who had suffered loss and counted it all gain.

She seemed  a bit annoyed when I asked her to sign her book to my mother, Mary. Now, as I better understand Elisabeth and the Jesus she daily died for, I  may understand why the autograph request did not bring her joy.

Elisabeth thought nothing of herself and everything of Christ. Could it be she was not pleased that I asked for her signature because the only imprint she wanted her audience to take away was what God wrote in their hearts.  Perhaps, in her mind, my asking for her autograph was a sign of failure because she had not achieved the goal:

Any who heard her voice or read her words would not want a part of her, but all of Christ!

Although our physical paths crossed only once, I've met her again and again in her writing and I've come to treasure her as one of my mentors of the faith. I love her because she helped me love and know God with all of my heart.

I saw the true, compassionate, loving Elisabeth Elliot in her book, Let Me Be A Woman, written to her daughter before she married.

"You marry a sinner. Why would you do that? There is no one else to marry." ~ Elisabeth Elliot in Let Me Be A Woman. This quote was an inspiration for my book We All Married Idiots. For Elisabeth first planted this thought in my mind that every spouse is a sinner, so if you divorce and remarry, you replace one sinner for another. These words encouraged me many a day in my own marriage as the reality of sin is revealed day after day in our idiotic selves.

A Chance to Die — The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael is another book that Elisabeth autographed in my heart  and God used to change this self-seeking child to a self-sacrificing, God seeking servant.  Amy Carmichael's writings impacted Elisabeth Elliot as Elisabeth's writings impacted me.

Thank you Elisabeth for being my friend via the written word, and showing me the truth you wrote in A Chance to Die:

"I saw that the chance to die,
to be crucified with Christ,
was not a morbid thing,
but the very gateway to Life . . . ."

Interesting, in the Preface of A Chance to Die,  Elisabeth wrote the following in 1987:

"If we are unaware,
 perhaps we have not listened,
taken time to observe.
Have we been deafened by noise,
some of the worst of which passes for music?
Has our vision,
 spiritual as well as physical,
perhaps been impaired
by the glittering images of the ubiquitous screen?

In spite of much that militates against quietness
there are people who still read books.
They are the people who keep me going.
I write especially for those
 who bring to their reading
a mind not hidebound
by the sensibilities of our own time,
but prepared to contemplate
 the Eternally Relevant;
to seek in this book specifically the truth
and the hidden meaning of a single life."

Oh, that we would all write like my mentor and friend, Elisabeth Elliot.

Splashes of serenity sprinkled all over with Jesus!

Expect God to Show Up at Your Book Signing!

Marketing, marketing, marketing! Professionals say publishing a book is 10 percent writing and 90 percent marketing. While drowning in the marketing pool, let's not forget our marketing and our writing should be 100 percent ministering to readers.

That's why I love book signings and speaking. I meet  people who live on the earth and not on a page. Humans with  flesh and feelings and pain more intense than the best author can write in a book.

This sign greeted me as I entered my Barnes and Noble book signing last Saturday. For a second I thought the signing was all about Elaine. Pinching myself back to reality, I prayed God would bring people to my table who need Jesus. He did.

Happy couple walked in arm-in-arm in love. On a course set by the Savior, they strolled straight to my book table. Oh my, they could hardly keep their hands off each other. The scene was cute and fun and Norman Rockwell worthy. "We're getting married!" she announced! Picking up We All Married Idiots, she smiled and said, "We won't need this. You see, we've both been married before."

I couldn't help my response. The words flew from my mouth, "Then I think you need this book even more!" (I didn't tell her that second marriages have a higher divorce rate than first marriages.) "Are you going for pre-marital counselling?"

"Oh no. We've already been married. We don't need counselling."

"Well, then I think you need my book. Some Pastors are using We All Married Idiots for pre-marital counselling."

More somber, she looked into my eyes and said, "I think you're right." Her future hubby seemed a bit stunned as she grabbed We All Married Idiots and headed for the check out.

I've added this couple to my prayer list.

Another sweet one came to my table hesitant to buy my book. She said, "I'm divorced and I have no plans to marry again, so why would I need to read this?"

I told her the book is helpful for singles in dealing with all their relationships.

She looked at the long check out line and sighed, "There's such a long line and I'm anxious to leave. I really don't want this book." Silence. "Oh, all right. Will you sign it for me?"

Five minutes later she returned jubilant! "I started reading while in line to buy your book and I couldn't believe it. I read one page and what you said touched my heart and helped me with a situation right where I am right now. I want another book to send to my son and his wife. They are going through some difficulties. This will really help them."

Thanks, God, for giving me words to write and books to market. Thank You for giving me opportunities to minister to people.  Most of all, thank You God for showing up at my book signings!

What a Splash of Serenity!

Book Signings! The Joy of Your Labor!

Woo Hoo! It' a book signing day!

Some authors don't enjoy book signings. Not me.  I'm a people person. It takes discipline to sit at my computer and write all day. Discipline is painful. Meeting readers and signing my books does not hurt. It's the joy of my labor.

The sweet couple (in the above photo) came as strangers and left as friends. Their marriage is strong because they work at keeping their love alive. Laughing, they left with We All Married Idiots and plans to read it together every night before sleep. Hmmm. You see why I love book signings!

I still pray for the hurting woman years ago who came to my table. She didn't look at me. She picked up my book Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Wives. Reading page after page, she eventually looked up and said, "I have every intention of leaving my  husband, but first I'm going to read this book." I hugged her and prayed with her right there in Barnes & Noble. You see why I love book signings!

Join me in prayer for the people God already planned to stop by my table today. Maybe it's you!

Meet me at the DeWitt Barnes & Noble, 3454 Erie Boulevard East, DeWitt, NY from 1:00 to 3:00 today, Saturday, February 2, 3013.

I'd love to wish you Happy Valentine's Day! There will be kisses!!! Hersheys, that is.

After the book signing, I drive to Rochester, NY where I am speaking on marriage at the Trinity Alliance Church, 1275 Spencerport Road, Rochester, Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Kudos to Pastor Denes House who is preaching a series on marriage! He's giving his pulpit to me this Sunday. Brave man!!!

If you are in the Rochester area, come see me at Trinity. I won't give you kisses (Hersheys), but lots of food from God's Word to nourish your marriage.

Praying for a Splashes of Serenity in a building filled with books and readers and a church filled with Bibles and worshipers.  Ahhh! Feels like good places to be on a snowy weekend!

A Day in the Life of a Book Signing

Book signings are my favorites, because I love meeting readers face to face. Plus spending the day in a bookstore makes me giddy.

Here are a few shots and thoughts from my booksigning Saturday at the Arrowhead Christian Bookstore in Binghamton, NY.

Dress and act professionally. Remember, you represent the store and the publisher and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Having a friend around to help promote is a plus. Thanks to Bonnie Calhoun, author of Cooking the Books, (See her book at http://www.amazon.com/Cooking-Books-Sloane-Templeton-Mystery/dp/1426733887/ ) , who sat and drew customers in for three hours. What a treat. Thanks, Bonnie.

Meet the employees and have a good time. Afterall, these are the people who sell your books. This sweet lady told me her daughter said, "I didn't marry an idiot." After reading the back cover, the daughter then said, "Oh yes I did!" Mom was buying her We All Married Idiots  for Christmas.

What a sweet couple. She was hesitating. Her husband assured her, "Buy the book. We should read this." I have no concerns about this marriage. You could see their love for each other. Plus they plan to read We All Married Idiots together.

Stand up and talk and listen to people's thoughts. This dear man shares my concern for marriages today. He thanked me for writing Three Things You'll Never Change About Your Marriage and Ten Things You Can.

For some reason men are my best customers. In marketing, don't exclude any audience. Singles are reading We All Married Idiots too as they think about marriage in their future.

Be enthusiastic and pass out postcards or book marks as you walk around the store.

So many loved my book and laughed out loud at the title. Others shared their marriage stories and the pain. May We All Married Idiots be used of God to heal.

Blessed to say SOLD OUT! and thankful I remembered to put a case of Idiots in my trunk so I could sell some more. Thank you, Arrowhead Bookstore! You and all those readers were a splash of serenity to me yesterday.

Don't forget to put We All Married Idiots in your Christmas stocking. You can order autographed copies on this website or on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/We-All-Married-Idiots-Marriage/dp/0984765522/

Merry Christmas!!!

Why I LOVE Book Signings

I LOVE book signings. Being a people person, I crave meeting readers face to face. Screen time can frustrate an extrovert like me. Get me out into the public — now!

Plus, the God appointments at each signing leave me amazed at how God works.

I remember my first book signing of my first book, Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Moms. I stood at the store's entrance and handed a book to every person who walked in. Inviting them to take a look, I assured them they didn't have to buy and explained Splashes of Serenity: Bathtime Reflections for Drained Moms were short devotional stories of real moms whose lives have known pain and experienced victory.

One customer listened to my "sales pitch" and started to cry. She shared with me:

"I'm visiting my daughter. She just learned her 18 month old daughter will never walk. She and her husband are at their home devastated. I decided to give them some time alone and I went for a walk. I've never even seen this book store. I'm not from this city. But as I walked down the street it was as though God told me to go into this store. Then, the first person I meet is you who hands me this book for drained moms. I know I'm to buy it for my daughter."

I prayed with her and stood in awe at God's divine intervention at a book signing. I will share similar stories in the future as my book signings often bring a stranger in need.

If you are in the Syracuse area, I'll be signing all three of my books this Saturday, September 8 at Sacred Melody bookstore (the same store where the above happened), 3501 James Street in Syracuse from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. I'd love to meet you.

Please pray for me as I am a guest on Bridge Street, News Channel 9 WSYR TV this Friday, September 7 live at 10:00 a.m. and recorded at 8:00 p.m.

May we never miss the opportunity to be a splash of serenity in someone's life.

Thanks for your splash of serenity to me!
