My Mother's Day Dreams Come True

All I ever wanted was to be a mom. As a child, my Christmas list consisted of one item--a baby doll. No career aspirations for me--I wanted to get married and have babies.

At age 19, having some female issues, I found myself sitting in an OB-GYN office. As though he was telling me "it's raining outside" the doctor gave his matter-of-fact diagnosis: "You'll never be able to have a baby."

Stunned, speechless, numb, I didn't catch the bus to my apartment. I just walked with no destination in mind. Seeing a telephone booth ahead, I entered this private shelter in a public place. Shutting the door, I crouched down, and cried and cried and cried from the most gut-wrenching pain I had ever felt. When I stopped crying, I called my mother, told her the news, and felt her pain and her hugs across the telephone line as she bore this anguish with me. Thank God for Mothers.

Better yet, thank God for God. The doctor was not God. God is God. And God had a better plan for me. God creates our babies in our wombs, He knows the plans He has for me. God's plan for me was to bless me--to give me three gifts--three babies.

I rejoice on Mother's Day that in God's sovereignty, He allowed me to be a Mom. I don't take that lightly. Many don't have this blessing. I, according to that doctor and the second opinion I also received, was not to have babies. What is impossible for a human body (and in the brains of two doctors), is possible for God. Nothing is impossible for Him.

I thank God for my three wonderful children, Joanna, Elizabeth, and Sam--my three treasures--my three surprise gifts. They exceed any expectations I had of the joys of motherhood. Thank You, God, for allowing me the privilege of bearing them and the fun of loving them and enjoying life with each one now grown to adulthood. Thank You, God, for the thousands of kisses and hugs and sweet love they've given back to me. Children truly are a gift to be treasured from You.

Happy Mother's Day, dear Moms. Treasure the blessing of Motherhood God has given to you.

Splashes of Serenity,

Elaine

  3. Elaine, what a wonderful testimony.
My testimony concerning a family is a little different. I never had any natural children, but I had 12 foster children, some of whom are doing well. (College, good marriages, and all). Almost all of them have called to thank me for what I tried to do to help them. Jesus was (and is) their salvation, not me.
I think I might have had one miscarriage, so there's possibly a child waiting in glory for me.

  8. Ah. Something we have in common. :) When I was in my late teens, I was told the same thing but believed God for miracles. Despite our standing in faith, we were still surprised when I got pregnant -- pretty quickly after we married, in fact. That child was not meant to be but after two miscarriages and a few years spent seeking God, we were blessed with my lovely daughter - now 23 and then my son, now 22. God IS a God of miracles and I thank him every day for the miracles I have called Scott and Melissa.

  9. Dear Elaine,
Your story is so wonderful! As I grew up no one including myself ever imagined me capable of nurturing therefore the family and "world" around me imagined my sister with 13 and me with just a career. Thank God for His plans. I married 1 month shy of 21 and my first little one came 1 1/2 years later. There were struggles at first. I still remember thirty some years later looking at my sister in the middle of one of the first nights telling her I had no idea what to do to help my poor colicky child because I'd never kept them overnight before. But there were many nights after that that God gave wisdom for and the days of discovery. I found life wonderful looking through the eyes of the four baby boys that God granted me. Each stage of life was so wonderful: I can't tell you which was my favorite. Possibly, though being grandma and having those little ones yell, " Grandma" while running to entwine their arms about my neck. I can't wait for the next time. Thank you, Lord for your wonderful blessings and all the surprises along the way.
    In Him,
