The Love Story Written Between the Lines of "Where's Heidi?"

Where's Heidi? is a love story. It's a story of a sister's love, a community's love, a parent's love, and a Savior's love. There's another love story tucked between the lines as well. The love of a husband for his wife.

Ed and Lisa Buske were newlyweds when Lisa's sister was abducted from the local convenient store. She was never seen again. Lisa writes Where's Heidi? from a sister's perspective. But what about her husband? How was he in the midst of this tragedy?

In an instant, Ed Buske's life changed. In some ways I suspect he lost the bride he married months earlier. The honeymoon was over. Would that loss be temporary or permanent? He had no way of knowing. But he stayed and he loved and supported and held and kissed the cheeks and forehead of the woman he vowed to love until death do they part. A lesser man might have bailed. But not Ed.

Yesterday as I watched Ed Buske sit by his wife at her first book signing, I smiled and thanked God that Ed loved Lisa through those awful years.  He did what my book, We All Married Idiots encourages husbands and wives to do. In a crisis and in the everyday, hold on, settle down, make nice, cheer on, sit tight, and look up!

The Buske marriage story could have ended quite differently. Many marriages don't make it through the difficult days.

My husband says Philippians 2:3-4 are the greatest verses on marriage in the Bible.

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit,
but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Each of you should look not only to your own interests,
but also to the interests of others."

Thanks, Ed, for not considering yourself in those days, but considering your Lisa as more important than you. Thanks, Lisa, for writing that truth between the lines of Where's Heidi?

How about you? Is your marriage in a crisis?  I encourage you to hold on, sit tight, look up, and consider your spouse's interest above your own. Ed did, and their marriage glows!

  1. Elaine,

Thank you so much for this surprise today! You brought such a smile to my face and highlighted an aspect of the story woven within the covers of "Where's Heidi?" I didn't realize until now. I should have known after I said, "I married and Idiot, and so did He" yesterday while relaxing between book signings - a blog was coming. I would have done the same thing.

You are a blessing. I linked people over via my "Book Reviews" page on my site too.

    Thank you again!

  2. Love it Lisa, because it was a God thing. I wanted to write a blog about you on the day of your release, and He gave me the smile and the idea when I watched you and Ed together at Valero. So sweet and tender at such a raw time.

    I love you, my friend,
    Elaine
